Course Overview
This training course has been designed by the Queensland Dept of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in order to accredit individuals with the skills required to control traffic with a stop/slow bat at:Road worksites where a road closure is necessary, or
Other events on the road where a road closure or part road closure is necessary, or
Other circumstances where traffic control is required on a roadway
The course provides the trainee with the knowledge and practical skills as a traffic controller to plan and prepare their work; coordinate traffic; operate two way radios and clean up their worksites.
Training Services is now delivering the updated (July 2017) Traffic Control Training featuring the "Ready Reckoner".
The "Ready Reckoner" has been designed as a mandatory training resource during the Control traffic with stop-slow bat training program with and also serves as a quick reference pocket guide post training which needs to be kept on you at all times, much like your traffic control licence.
It provides Traffic Controllers with a practical guide of the day to day operations and other requirements that must be adhered to while preforming Traffic Control duties.
Eligibility
To become an accredited Traffic Controller in Queensland, you must have held an Australian or Foreign / Provisional or Open Drivers licence in the last five (5) years and be minimum 18 years of age.
To work as a traffic controller you will be required to possess a certain level of language, literacy and numeracy skills.
Some criminal convictions in the past 5 years may exclude you from obtaining accreditation and you must complete a Traffic Controller Accreditation Scheme Application declaring your traffic and criminal offence history and your medical fitness.
It is also a requirement for a Traffic Controller working on a construction site (eg. Roadway) to hold a White card or (Qld) Blue card (Construction Safety Induction Card).
Please talk to us if you require this training as we offer the latest CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
Course Duration – 1 day
We hold regular group classes in Townsville and Cairns and are able to deliver training onsite if required.
Part A –Classroom based theory component for approximately 8 hours, consisting of theoretical and simulated practical components.
Part B – Industry placement at worksite for practical component. Trainees must complete a minimum of 20 log book hours of practical experience at a roadwork site under the direct supervision of an experienced accredited traffic controller.
This will be arranged and provided by Training Services through an approved Traffic Management Company.
Participants do not get paid for this time and feedback will be provided in the form of a log book once participants have completed the theoretical component of the course. The completed log book is signed off by the supervisor and returned to Training Services for our records.
Outcome and obtaining your licence
Upon completion of this course, it is expected that participants will have acquired knowledge, skill and understanding to be able to control traffic on a road reserve using a STOP/SLOW bat in accordance with legislative requirements and guidelines.
You will need to lodge your application and fee at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre that conducts industry licensing business.
Licence Applications are lodged at most Queensland Transport Customer Service Centres. The approximate processing time for licence applications is 3 – 4 weeks due to the time required for criminal history checks, although this time may vary in some cases. Please see the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD's website for licencing fees and contact them on 13 23 80 if you hold a foreign drivers licence or any concerns regarding your eligibility to obtain your traffic control licence.
Applicants are not permitted to work as a Traffic Controller until they receive their Licence.
Traffic Controllers are required to undertake a refresher course every three years in order to maintain their accreditation.
